Scarlett loved to dance, and her house was always filled with rhythm.
Her parents would clap along, and Little Jazzy Jo-Jo's paws would tap-tap-tap in time.
But when Scarlett's dreams of dancing on a real stage finally come true, will she find her own rhythm? Will she shine like a star?

From the bestselling creator of Rudie Nudie comes a gorgeous new picture book for every child who dreams of the stage.

“This is a gorgeous celebration of all things that performance for young children should be about; sparkle; diversity; the sheer delight of performing for an audience; little focus on ability; lots of focus on fun and children knowing that somewhere out there in the audience are people who are glowing with pride, just for them.
Highly Recommended and another of Emma Quay's creations that shines brightly.”

CHILDREN'S BOOKS DAILY, November 2015

“This is a truly gorgeous, romping, feel-good tale... Quay's divine imagery – both full page and vignette – is charm personified, with a high-kicking colour palette and linework to make any reader smile. Great characters, warmth, action and fun – Scarlett, Starlet is quite simply a feel-good tale that smacks of Classic.”

KIDS BOOK REVIEW, November 2015

“The vibrant illustrations of this joyful book virtually leap off the page into your lap as Scarlett dances around the house to the rhythm of her dog, Jazzy Jo-Jo's tap tapping toes. This exuberant book oozes emotion – joy, love, uncertainty, fear, excitement, anticipation, pride … right down to the doting parents. Written in tight prose, each word of this book is polished till it shines. The inclusiveness here is one of the delights of the story – recognition that all children can shine, and are stars in the eyes of their parents, which is all that's important. No cut-throat competition world here – just delight in the dance.
Quay has tapped into the joy of dance and performance that would resonate in households around the world.”

A gentle, heartwarming picture book to share and treasure from

There comes a time for sleeping, and our sleepy time is now...
So fall asleep, my angel, with a kiss upon your brow.

FROM AUTHOR, MEM FOX: TALKING ABOUT HER GRANDSON AND BABY BEDTIME:
Mem Fox (R) and Emma Quay, author and illustrator of “Baby Bedtime” “I am nuts about this book. I come to it with extreme bias, needless to say, having written it for Theo when he was about three weeks old. He weighed 1 kilo at the time. His tiny arms were the size of my index finger. The first verse came out extempore and has remained as it is from first draft to finished book. I cannot be objective about this book as I am so intensively involved in it and because of the love I poured into it.”

“irresistible. A bracing burst of joie de vivre, ideal for any rude, nude, naked brood”

KIRKUS REVIEW, October 2014

“The pencil sketches are wonderfully right for this text, lending it a sense of immediacy and movement… Written in lyrical prose, this delightful tale captures the essence of the bathtime experience. Every parent and child will relate to this charming book. Highly recommended for preschoolers (and their parents).”

READING TIME, November 2011

“Quay's divine, sketchy illustrations do more than just delight the eye with their colour-blocked sorbet glory – they also perfectly convey the fresh and freeing tactile bliss children so enjoy with a rudie nudie run. The faces on these illustrated children is truly priceless – childhood joy and innocence in a gorgeous book that truly harnesses the physical freedom of being young.

A new classic that all kids – big and little – will fall in love with. Be prepared for major repeat-readings. And some rudie nudie copy-cat dashes.”

KIDS BOOK CAPERS, November 2011

“Parents will delight in this book and children will appreciate its cheeky playfulness. Emma's pastel coloured illustrations delightfully capture the true essence of toddlers: joy, freedom, exploration and innocence… The story is beautifully rhythmic, told with the use of both playful (roly-poly, loop-the-loop) and comforting words (squeeze, snug).

We are left with an image of these perfect cherubs nestled and peaceful in bed.

Who's the cheeky monkey at your place?

Someone's pretending to be asleep, but one little monkey is awake
and soon the whole house will be a zoo!

From the team who snuggled you down and tucked you in with Good Night, Me,
Cheeky Monkey is about the games we love to play in the morning—bringing to life
all the funny and affectionate names we call our children: cheeky monkey, lucky duck,
sweet pea, silly billy and more.

“Cheeky Monkey is one of those books that just grabs you from the first moment you pick it off the shelf. It gave me that little skip in the heart beat I get when I see something really beautiful.”

WE HEART BOOKS, July 2008

“Daddo and Quay's latest book is a beauty, which children will enjoy listening to when very young, and reading as they get a little older. The images are innovative and natural all at the same time. This is a book you'll read and treasure for many years.”

PRESCHOOL ENTERTAINMENT, October 2008

“Andrew Daddo has a special talent for spotting the things that most parents do, and turning it into something that parents and children can relate to. Emma Quay's illustrations work really well to convey the warmth and character of the relationships being depicted. The whole effect is both soft, and accessible – any family; a standard day; and tons of love.

“One of the best.”

Oz-teachers, July 2008

“A beautifully illustrated narrative about the loving relationship between a father and his toddler son.”

Australian Family Therapists' Award for Children's Literature, 2009: Books Useful for Therapists

FROM AUTHOR, ANDREW DADDO:
Andrew Daddo, author of “Good Night, Me” “My wife Jac and I were laughing about all the names people call their kids—the way some are cute and some are cuddly and some are plain ridiculous. Then Jac suggested it'd be a good idea for a book, because we could put all the names we use for our own kids, and the names our friends use for theirs, into one collection.

“SIMPLE—but then, the pain… the narrative… the logic… And how would the pictures work? What should they look like? Would they be of a boy or a girl? And would that be Mum or Dad with them - or both? And it went from being pretty simple to exhausting, especially for Emma. Having said that, the book is gorgeous, we're all really happy with it and we've slipped in our favourite names as well!”

Someone's ready for bed, but it's going to take a long, long time to say good night!

A gentle, warm gift book for all ages from writer and TV presenter Andrew Daddo, author of the bestselling "Sprung" series.

FROM AUTHOR, ANDREW DADDO:
Andrew Daddo, author of “Good Night, Me” & “Cheeky Monkey” “I wrote Good Night, Me after saying good night to Felix, my son, when he was about two. Every night, after reading him a story, he'd say, "Tell me a story with your mouth." I decided to say good night to the different parts of his body. About halfway through I got incredibly excited because I thought, there's an idea for a book here.”

You can let go now, hands.
We're all going to sleep.
No need to hang on any longer, arms.
Is anybody in my body still awake?

“A comforting, self-soothing pattern for little ones to quiet their tired bodies and souls.”

KIRKUS REVIEWS, Fall 2007

“What's most refreshing is the natural and imaginative engagement the young orangutan has in his meditation and respect for his body—something many adults strive to attain. It's no surprise that Andrew Daddo is becoming more and more renowned for his younger children's stories… [Emma Quay's] illustrations are original, beautifully coloured and perfectly complement the dialogue.”

(An exceptional book of the very highest quality, regardless of genre)

CHILDREN'S PUBLISHER AND BOOKSELLER, March 2005

“Finally, a bedtime story that I look forward to reading every night, as much as my toddler does! The warmth and affection of this little book jumps off the pages through Emma Quay's beautiful illustrations and Andrew Daddo's clever text… the result is funny, imaginative and so sweet that it will bring a tear to any parent's eye.”

FROM AUTHOR, LISA SHANAHAN:
Lisa Shanahan, author of “Bear and Chook” & “Daddy's Having a Horse”. (Photo courtesy of Jen McVeity.) “I began to wonder what it would be like if a bear and a chook were best friends. It struck me as a very funny and unlikely friendship but as I thought about it I realised that many friendships are unlikely… and even bizarre!

“What I like about the characters of Bear and Chook is that despite all their differences they are big-hearted, generous and forgiving of each other.

“… a few lines of dialogue began to ring around my head:

'What do you want to be when you grow up?' asked Bear.
    'An old chook,' said Chook.
'Oh,' said Bear, wrinkling his nose.'

“In those few lines I had my story. I could suddenly see a bear who loved adventure and quests thrusting his best friend Chook into all sorts of mischief. And even though Chook liked peace and quiet, he would willingly follow Bear into all of his messes because that is what true friendship is all about.”

FROM AUTHOR, LISA SHANAHAN:
Lisa Shanahan, author of “Bear and Chook”, “Bear and Chook by the Sea” & “Daddy's Having a Horse”. (Photo courtesy of Jen McVeity.) “For some time after I had written Bear and Chook, many people encouraged me to think about a sequel. For ages I had been wrestling with what would happen next to Bear and Chook, and all along the answer had been there in the first book—if only I had the eyes to see it— from the moment Bear climbed the mud castle and waved from the turret, saying to Chook, 'I can see the sea…'.

“To get the sea, of course, there had to be dangers along the way first. They had to leave the pond, their familiar home. There had to be a bridge, a forest, a mountain. Places they had to travel under, through and over before they finally arrived, because this gives the story the echo of a quest.

“The thing I hope children will respond to in Bear and Chook by the Sea is the truth that deep friendship has this amazing capacity to make us more than we will ever be just on our own, no matter where we go.”

“This book will enchant readers of all ages.”

But she's not as excited as her brother Lachlan.

She has a flair for finding an unexpected or even quirky angle that gives her work a fresh engaging character… Once again, Emma Quay's work is distinctively endearing without being at all sentimental. Even the endpapers are a treat worth savouring.”

 (An excellent book)

CHILDREN'S PUBLISHER AND BOOKSELLER, March 2005

“…will not only delight young readers, but also cause adults to chuckle. This is a lovely story about a very close family unit and the ways in which they cope with the daily challenges life throws up to us. It can be enjoyed at many levels.”

READING TIME, February 2006

FROM AUTHOR, LISA SHANAHAN:
Lisa Shanahan, author of “Bear and Chook” & “Daddy's Having a Horse”. (Photo courtesy of Jen McVeity.) “Like many writers, I tend to get the original inspiration for a story from the world around me; from things that I hear, things that I see and from things that I feel.

“When I was pregnant with my second child two years ago, I can remember going to playgroup, desperately asking the other mothers there how their kids had coped with the idea of a new baby. You see, I was anxious about my first little boy. I was anxious that he might feel that I was trying to replace him. One of the mothers, who was also pregnant but with her third child, told me this story—she said, “My children are very excited about me having a new baby. They go around telling everyone. The butcher, the newsagent, the drycleaner. This is what they say. Caitlin says, 'My mum's having a baby!' And Lachlan, my little boy says, 'And my daddy's having a horse!'" I did a double take. “Sorry!” I said. “Could you tell me that again.” So she did.

“For me, it was the beginning of a story.

“I couldn't stop thinking about that little boy. What would it be like to be so convinced that your daddy was going to have a horse, that whenever you rested your head against his hairy belly, you were sure that you could hear it burp? What would it be like to turn up at the hospital with your grandparents, expecting and hoping to see the horse? How would this little boy feel when he realised, that after all that hoping and expecting that there was no horse and never would be? What would he do? Out of that one little conversation came the whole story for my second picture book with Emma Quay, called Daddy's Having a Horse.”

Emily and Alfie are best friends looking for adventure. They decide to sneak off and peek inside—just for a minute…

Fall in love with the mischievous and extremely adorable Emily and Alfie.

JUNIOR BOOKSELLER AND PUBLISHER, May 2006

“The lovely illustrations are well integrated with the lively and lyrical text which is imaginatively laid out in different places on the pages. This is a great resource to use on a variety of topics like feelings and the consequences of not following instructions.”

PRACTICAL PARENTING, June 2006

FROM AUTHOR, MEREDITH HOOPER:
Meredith Hooper, author of “Emily and Alfie” & “Thank You for My Yukky Present” “On my first trip to Antarctica, as a writer, I was flying in a helicopter over an expanse of glittering sea ice when the pilot spotted, amongst a cluster of icebergs, an emperor colony. No one knew it was there. And ever since that day I have wanted to write a story about the emperor penguins.

“Emperor penguins raise their chicks in a big colony on fast ice, often anchored by grounded icebergs. The sea—where one parent goes in turn, leaving the other to guard the chick—can be a great distance across the ice. The chicks have to wait a long time between meals.

“The story is set in summer. The chicks are growing. Emily and Alfie are beginning to be able to go off by themselves. Their fathers are on guard duty, their mothers are off getting food to feed them. Ice caves in icebergs are majestically beautiful, but they are genuinely dangerous, especially when the sun shines.

“Emily and Alfie live in a landscape that is manageable and explorable. Their world is a colony of adult penguins guarding chicks, with the icebergs as a backdrop, and the sea too far away to know exactly where it is. When they go inside the iceberg they discover a mysterious hidden world.”

Friends For Keeps

Scholastic Press introduces Friends for Keeps — a series of bright, joyous books
for young children, written by Emma Quay and illustrated by
award-winning illustrator, Anna Walker.

Soon to be published in Japan, the USA, Canada, the UK and Ireland.

Come and play with Panda, Sheep and Owl.

APA 2010 Award

Annual APA Book Design Awards, 2010
Winner, Best Designed Children's Series

FROM ILLUSTRATOR, ANNA WALKER:
Anna Walker, illustrator of “Friends for Keeps” series “The first time I read the texts for Friends for Keeps out loud, my children and I were all laughing. It was a delight to develop images for words that were so appealing even before there were pictures.

“Whenever I sit down to draw Panda, Sheep and Owl, I find myself smiling, thinking about the way their individual personalities play out in the stories. Panda is bossing everyone around, Sheep is nervously looking at a game wanting to join in but a bit shy, and most amusing is little Owl who is very funny, without meaning to be!

“From the beginning I wanted the feel of the books to be simple, friendly and fun. I hoped to use fabric collage but was not sure it would work. I created a few colour roughs, and after many trips to the fabric shop, lots of cutting and pasting, I finally created a background for Panda, Sheep and Owl that I was happy with.

“As author, editor and illustrator, Emma, Ana Vivas and I made a great team—all contributing to make the books what they are. It is very exciting seeing Panda, Sheep and Owl taking their journey into the big wide world.”

“Embracing the magic of everyday… A fun-filled journey, affirming ones special place in the world, this brand new series of books should not be missed!”

THE BENDIGO WEEKLY, June 2009

“The beautifully illustrated and written books will quickly become your children's favourites. These Friends for Keeps are books for keeps.”

Over $250,000 raised so far

In 2005, television news around the world reported the terrible starvation that was killing thousands of people in Niger. As a result, Colin Thompson has called together thirteen illustrators to create a book to raise money to try to help.

In a perfect world, this book would not exist. But we do not live in a perfect world. At any given moment of any given day, there are people dying from natural disasters over which we have no control. Beyond natural disasters we add disasters of our making, but even if we all learn to live in peace, there will still be millions of people who need help.

The illustrators who have contributed to this startling book have all done so free of charge. All royalties earned will be donated to the Save the Children organisation in Australia.

DUST is written by Colin Thompson, with a forward by Margaret Douglas of Save the Children Australia, and illustrated by Tom Byrne, Gaye Chapman, Terry Denton, Kim Gamble, Judy Horacek, David Legge, Chris Mould, Emma Quay, Tohby Riddle, Dee Texidor, Colin Thompson, Bruce Whatley and Richard Yot.

Topsy and Turvy

Penguin Books Australia, Aussie Nibbles, 2001

ISBN: 0141309385

Paperback 72 page black and white chapter book

Topsy the fruit bat doesn't like fruit, and gets dizzy if she hangs upside down. Turvy the owl doesn't enjoy eating grubs, or standing on his head. When both youngsters are tipped out of their trees by a passing whirlwind, they meet each other and discover they have been accidentally swapped at birth.

"This is the latest Aussie Nibble and it is a gem. Perhaps my favourite so far. It's a theme which has been done many times before but rarely with as much humour and charm both in the text and in the illustrations."

AUSTRAL ED NEWS, September 2000

"Excellent reading for the early reader… The charming illustrations successfully support the emotions expressed in this story."

Paperback 80 page black and white chapter book

Rebecca Yallop is shocked to find that she has turned into a horse—trouble is, no one except her little brother seems to be able to see it. Horse Girl is the latest hilarious book in the Hotshots series, this time written by John Larkin, one of Australia's funniest writers and accompanied by the illustrations of Emma Quay.

As a horse, Rebecca finds that her whole world is collapsing around her, the family home included, when a simple game of chasings results in the demolition of the kitchen. Out on the school oval it's different, and she finally discovers a talent for running when Ms Pharlap and Mr Vanderhum clock her breaking a world record. They suggest that she enter the Melbourne Cup!

"This is a wonderfully quirky and funny book and you don't have to be horse mad to enjoy it, though I suspect those who are will find it even more hilarious."

Moon Won Books, 2001

The Puzzle Duck is always answering questions and has become a bit of a guru: she's the oldest and wisest animal in the country. But when she's asked where the sun goes at night and why the rain falls from the sky, her answers are more imaginative than accurate! She tells her sister that the trick is to believe the answers yourself even if they're not true. They will make people happy.

Well, she may outwit her sister and silly old Ethel the chicken, but when she comes face to face with the fox, it's a situation straight out of ancient fable and myth. And The Puzzle Duck would certainly lose her life—if it weren't for the truth being there to save her!

A funny cautionary tale about the power of a lie and the simple truth.

"… an hilarious sequence of events which fascinate and connect with young readers… a rich source of different attitudes about happiness, the value of knowledge and wisdom, the importance of relationships and the perception of self. Highly recommended."

What makes a champion? Can anyone be a champion at anything? The animals are going to find out!

In a funny and bizarre series of tournaments—a tiger in a pillow fight with a stingray, a python racing a hippo in a supermarket trolley, and other imaginary contests, we conclude that they're all champions in their own ways at what they do best.

A lively, read-aloud rhyming text for readers up to and just starting school.
